Big Pedal week 1

Well done to all of you who biked or scooted to school this week, especially in the snow on Tuesday! We are currently the second best school in Edinburgh for biking and scooting!!

Next Wednesday we’re going to set up a scooter course. All those kids who bring in their scooter next Wednesday will be able to go out and take part during the day.

Keep scooting and biking!!

The Venn Diagram Breakfast

In a gap somewhere between Red Nose Day and the Big Pedal lies the Venn Diagram breakfast . . . . .

Thank you to all of you who came and scooted and biked and helped feed the masses.

Thanks also to Sainsburys and Morrisons for donating some of our breakfast.

And finally, thank you to the Ed Sheeran look-a-like for popping in and making an appearance.

Bike Breakfast Postponed! Red Nose Day Bike Breakfast Created!

Attention

The weather tomorrow morning is supposed to be pretty bad, so we’re postponing the Bike and Scooter breakfast until Friday 24th March (this Friday) which is also Red Nose day. Please come from 8am onwards for some bike and scooter fun and games and some free breakfast. If you normally come to running club – please just come and join in with the biking and scooting.

Thank you to everyone who has biked and scooted to school so far this week. You have to be a pretty special person to bike or scoot in the snow (and have pretty special parents who help you too).

Thank you,

J Mowbray

Big Pedal Day 1

Here’s a wee video of some of our P2s and P3s biking today with Simon Fagan from Edinburgh Road club who came in to work with us. Brrrrrrr! It was chilly out! But the biking warmed us up. Well done to all those kids and mums and dads who biked and scooted to school today. What a great way to start each day.
Keep on biking!

THE BIG PEDAL!

The Big Pedal is a national event aimed at encouraging kids and parents to bike and scoot to school. This year the ‘race’ takes place over 2 weeks from 20th – 31st March: our last 2 weeks of term. This year’s theme is ‘Around the World in 10 days’. The Big Pedal models a bike tour race and each day represents a stage around the world.

EVERY JOURNEY COUNTS! Each trip to and from school on a bike or a scooter scores us points in a competition against other school across Edinburgh and Scotland. Two years ago more kids biked and scooted to our school than any other school in Edinburgh! Let’s see if we can reach this target again! Mums and dads, parents and carers, brothers and sisters – your journeys count too – so please get on your bikes as well.

All those children who bike or scoot to school for all 10 days of the challenge will receive a reflective arm band. Their names will also be put into a hat on the last day of the Big Pedal to win bike accessory prizes such as back packs, helmets, lights and locks.

On Monday 2oth March all those children in P3 and P4 who bike to school will be able to take part in a session led by Simon Fagan from Edinburgh Road Bike Club. If you do bring your bike on this day could you please try to lock your bike on the astro fencing.

On Wednesday 22nd March all those children in P5, P6 and P7 who bring in their bikes will get to twork with Simon Fagan. Again, if you are in p5 – P7 could you try to lock your bike up near the astro on this Wednesday.

On Wednesday 22nd March we’re having a Bike Breakfast from 8am onwards. Come on your bike or scooter to get a free healthy breakfast and join in the biking races and games on the astro. Parents & Carers are very welcome to come and join in too.

On Wednesday 29th March Rab Ure our Active Schools Coordinator will be leading a scooter skills session for all those kids who come in on their scooter that day.

And finally  . . . on Friday 31st March all those kids who biked or scooted to school for all 10 days of the Big Pedal will get their names put into the hat for the prizes.

We strongly recommend that all children wear a helmet when riding a bike. Helmets can be bought from the school office for £7.

We teach cycling in Bikeability PE lessons in P5 and P7.

Cheap, reconditioned bikes can be bought from the Bike Station on Causewayside. www.thebikestation.org.uk

Myself and Simon Fagan from Edinburgh Road Club will be starting a free Bike club on Mondays after school in the summer term. Please come and see me if you like a letter to join the club.

If you have any questions about the Big Pedal or would love to come and help us out with any of the bike sessions we’re running please come and see me.

Yours

J. Mowbray

End of the Big Pedal/Keep on pedalling

Well done to all those of you who have biked or scooted to school over the past 3 weeks as part of the Big Pedal. It has been amazing to see so many wheels out the front of our school each day.

We came 2nd school in Edinburgh for the number of bike and scooter journeys made throughout the competition. Brilliant!

Now you’re in the habit – please keep on making your way to school under your own steam – it’s the best way to start your day!

A great big thankyou to mums and dads for all your support – it isn’t easy getting kids to school on bikes and scooters – so well done to you too.

Please keep safe on your wheels. Always be sure before you go any where near roads that it is safe to cross. Helmets are available at school for only £7.

83 names were put into a hat to see who would win the bike vouchers today. 83 children from the Nursery to P7 who had biked or scooted EVERY day for the last 3 weeks.

Keep on biking!
