The Big Pedal is a national event aimed at encouraging kids and parents to bike and scoot to school. This year the ‘race’ takes place over 2 weeks from 20th – 31st March: our last 2 weeks of term. This year’s theme is ‘Around the World in 10 days’. The Big Pedal models a bike tour race and each day represents a stage around the world.

EVERY JOURNEY COUNTS! Each trip to and from school on a bike or a scooter scores us points in a competition against other school across Edinburgh and Scotland. Two years ago more kids biked and scooted to our school than any other school in Edinburgh! Let’s see if we can reach this target again! Mums and dads, parents and carers, brothers and sisters – your journeys count too – so please get on your bikes as well.

All those children who bike or scoot to school for all 10 days of the challenge will receive a reflective arm band. Their names will also be put into a hat on the last day of the Big Pedal to win bike accessory prizes such as back packs, helmets, lights and locks.

On Monday 2oth March all those children in P3 and P4 who bike to school will be able to take part in a session led by Simon Fagan from Edinburgh Road Bike Club. If you do bring your bike on this day could you please try to lock your bike on the astro fencing.

On Wednesday 22nd March all those children in P5, P6 and P7 who bring in their bikes will get to twork with Simon Fagan. Again, if you are in p5 – P7 could you try to lock your bike up near the astro on this Wednesday.

On Wednesday 22nd March we’re having a Bike Breakfast from 8am onwards. Come on your bike or scooter to get a free healthy breakfast and join in the biking races and games on the astro. Parents & Carers are very welcome to come and join in too.

On Wednesday 29th March Rab Ure our Active Schools Coordinator will be leading a scooter skills session for all those kids who come in on their scooter that day.

And finally  . . . on Friday 31st March all those kids who biked or scooted to school for all 10 days of the Big Pedal will get their names put into the hat for the prizes.

We strongly recommend that all children wear a helmet when riding a bike. Helmets can be bought from the school office for £7.

We teach cycling in Bikeability PE lessons in P5 and P7.

Cheap, reconditioned bikes can be bought from the Bike Station on Causewayside.

Myself and Simon Fagan from Edinburgh Road Club will be starting a free Bike club on Mondays after school in the summer term. Please come and see me if you like a letter to join the club.

If you have any questions about the Big Pedal or would love to come and help us out with any of the bike sessions we’re running please come and see me.
